The Paris basin is a Mesozoic to Tertiary basin covering depressions filled in place with Permian-Carboniferous sediments laying on a Palaeozoic basement.

The basin subsidence is controlled by a late reactivation of Palaeozoic fault systems oriented NW-SE in the western part, N-S in the southern part and E-W to NE-SW in the eastern part.
